Step 1
Collect a clean, unaltered copy of the diploma
Ask the credential holder for the original PDF issued by the institution, or a high-resolution scan of the paper diploma (300 DPI minimum). Photos from a phone are acceptable but introduce glare, perspective, and compression that can obscure tampering signals. If possible, request the PDF directly from the institution’s registrar portal — it will carry metadata and a digital signature that a photograph cannot.

Step 3
Cross-reference the institution against accreditation databases
Confirm the issuing institution is real and currently accredited. For the US, check the Department of Education CHEA database. For the UK, check the Office for Students register. For international institutions, check UNESCO’s World Higher Education Database. If the institution is not listed — or is listed as a known diploma mill — the credential is effectively worthless regardless of how authentic the paper looks.
Step 4
Check the signatory and date logic
Every legitimate diploma carries signatures from officials who actually held that role on the date of issue. Verify the registrar or president named was in post on the award date (university websites usually list historical leadership). Check that the graduation date is consistent with the program length (a 4-year BS signed only 2 years after matriculation is a red flag). Step 5
Verify the credential number or QR code (if present)
Many modern diplomas include a credential ID or QR code linking to a public verification page hosted by the issuer. Scan and follow the link — confirm it resolves to a page on the issuer’s own domain (not a lookalike).
